Ethylene (C2H4) is a colourless, highly flammable gas with a Lower Explosive Limit of 2.7% in air. While studies show that ethylene has low toxicity and poses no significant health risks to humans, it is important to note that it is naturally occurring and can also result from combustion. Additionally, it is industrially produced from methane and petroleum. Ethylene has a faint musky-sweet odor.

Certain fruits, such as apples and pears, naturally emit ethylene during the ripening process. This gas plays a key role in ripening by influencing changes in texture, softening, color, and other physiological processes.

Ethylene (C2H4) is extensively utilized in the chemical industry, with over 50% of global demand focused on producing various types of polyethylene. Polyethylene is primarily used in:

- Films for packaging, plastic bags, and trash liners
- Injection molding
- Pipe extrusion
- Wire and cable sheathing and insulation
- Extrusion coating of paper and cardboard

Ethylene is also a key raw material in the production of numerous two-carbon compounds. These include ethanol, ethylene oxide (which is further converted to ethylene glycol for antifreeze and polyester fibers and films), and vinyl chloride (used to create PVC). Moreover, ethylene reacts with benzene to form ethylbenzene, which is then dehydrogenated into styrene, a vital component in producing plastics and synthetic rubber.
