Ozone (O₃) is a highly reactive gas composed of three oxygen atoms. It is naturally present in the Earth's stratosphere, forming the ozone layer that protects life from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. In industrial and environmental applications, ozone is widely used for its powerful oxidizing properties, but it also poses health risks at high concentrations.
Properties and Behavior
Ozone is a pale blue gas with a distinct, sharp odour often associated with electrical discharges or thunderstorms. It is heavier than air and can accumulate at lower levels in confined spaces, posing inhalation risks. As a strong oxidant, ozone readily reacts with organic and inorganic substances, making it a valuable tool in disinfection and chemical processing.

Health Effects and Exposure Limits
Exposure to ozone can cause respiratory irritation, chest pain, coughing, and exacerbation of lung diseases such as asthma. Prolonged or high-level exposure can lead to serious health effects, including lung inflammation and decreased lung function. Regulatory agencies have established strict exposure limits:
- OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration): Permissible exposure limit (PEL) is 0.1 ppm over an 8-hour work shift.
- NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health): Recommended exposure limit (REL) is 0.1 ppm for an 8-hour period, with a short-term exposure limit (STEL) of 0.3 ppm.
- EPA (Environmental Protection Agency): The National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) for ozone in ambient air is 0.070 ppm over an 8-hour period.
Industrial and Commercial Applications
Ozone is widely used in various industries due to its strong disinfecting and oxidizing capabilities:
- Water and Wastewater Treatment: Ozone is an effective disinfectant for killing bacteria, viruses, and organic contaminants in drinking water and sewage treatment plants.
- Air Purification: Used in industrial and commercial settings to remove odors, mold, and airborne contaminants.
- Food and Beverage Industry: Ozone is utilized to sanitize food processing equipment and extend the shelf life of perishable goods.
- Chemical Synthesis: Applied in bleaching, organic synthesis, and advanced oxidation processes for industrial manufacturing.
- Medical Applications: Ozone therapy is explored for its potential antimicrobial and therapeutic effects, though its safety and efficacy remain under investigation.
Safety Measures and Handling
Given its reactivity and potential health hazards, proper precautions are necessary when working with ozone:
- Ventilation and Containment: Ensure adequate airflow and use containment systems to prevent ozone accumulation.
- Ozone Monitors and Alarms: Install detection systems to monitor ozone levels and alert personnel to unsafe concentrations.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Workers handling ozone should wear appropriate respiratory protection and protective clothing.
- Exposure Control Measures: Limit ozone exposure time and ensure compliance with established safety guidelines.
