Applications
-
Power Plants and Energy Sector
Hydrogen is used in power plants for cooling generators and in renewable energy applications such as hydrogen fuel cells. Gas detectors are essential for monitoring potential leaks in power generation facilities to prevent accidents and equipment damage.
-
Industrial Manufacturing
In industrial settings, hydrogen is commonly used in metal refining, glass production, and the chemical industry. H₂ gas detectors help monitor hydrogen levels to prevent leaks that could lead to fires or explosions. Industries such as electronics manufacturing, where hydrogen is used in annealing and reduction processes, also benefit from continuous monitoring.
-
Hydrogen Fuel Stations and Vehicles
With the rise of hydrogen fuel cell technology, H₂ gas detectors are increasingly used in hydrogen refueling stations and fuel cell vehicles. These detectors help identify leaks in storage tanks, pipelines, and fuel cell systems to ensure the safety of workers and consumers.

Add Calibration Service
Ensure to keep up to date with your metrology requirements, by adding the calibration test report certificate.

Hydrogen gas (H₂) is the lightest and most abundant element in the universe. Being significantly lighter than air, hydrogen rapidly rises and disperses in open environments, reducing the risk of accumulation. However, in enclosed spaces or areas with limited ventilation, hydrogen can pose a serious safety hazard due to its highly flammable nature.
Composed of two hydrogen atoms, molecular hydrogen is a colourless, odourless, and tasteless gas. Unlike ammonia, hydrogen does not produce vapours heavier than air under any conditions, making it less likely to settle near ground level. However, its extremely low density and high diffusivity require strict containment measures in industrial applications.

Flammability and Safety Risks
One of the primary concerns associated with hydrogen gas is its high flammability. Hydrogen has a lower explosive limit (LEL) of 4% and an upper explosive limit (UEL) of 75% in air, meaning it can ignite over a wide concentration range. A single spark or heat source can cause rapid combustion, making proper leak detection and ventilation essential.
Additionally, hydrogen burns with an almost invisible flame, posing an increased risk of undetected fires. This necessitates the use of specialized flame detection systems in facilities where hydrogen is stored or utilized.
