Applications
-
Water Treatment
Ammonia (NH₃) plays a crucial role in water purification and wastewater treatment, primarily in the formation of chloramines for disinfection, removal of contaminants, and biological treatment processes. Below are the key reasons why ammonia is used in these applications:
- One of the primary uses of ammonia in water treatment is to react with chlorine to form chloramines, a group of disinfectants used in municipal drinking water systems.
- Ammonia is also used in wastewater treatment for biological nitrogen removal and pH adjustment.
- Ammonia stripping is a process used to remove excess ammonia from wastewater before it is released into the environment.
-
Chemical Manufacturing
Ammonia (NH₃) is a crucial raw material in the chemical manufacturing industry, for the production of plastics, explosives, and other chemicals.
- Ammonia is a primary ingredient in the production of urea (CO(NH₂)₂), which is further used to create various plastics and resins.
- Ammonia is a precursor to hexamethylenediamine (HMDA), which is a key intermediate in the manufacture of nylon 6,6.
- Ammonia is a critical ingredient in explosive compounds, mainly through the production of ammonium nitrate (NH₄NO₃), a key component in industrial and explosives.
- While primarily used as a fertilizer, ammonia is also a precursor for various agrochemicals and pesticides used in industrial chemical applications.
-
Refrigeration & HVAC Applications
Ammonia (NH₃) designated as Refrigerant R-717. is widely used as a refrigerant in industrial refrigeration and HVAC systems, especially in food processing, cold storage, and chemical plants.
- Cold Storage & Warehousing: Used in large refrigerated warehouses for storing perishable goods like fruits, vegetables, dairy, and frozen foods.
- Meat & Poultry Processing: Ammonia systems provide the necessary cooling for meatpacking and slaughterhouses.
- Dairy Industry: Used for chilling milk, processing cheese, and ice cream.
- Beverage Production: Carbonated drinks and breweries require ammonia refrigeration for cooling wort and fermentation tanks.
- In chemical plants, ammonia refrigeration is used to cool processes and prevent overheating.
- In pharmaceuticals, it is used in vaccine storage, chemical synthesis, and cryogenic applications.

A colourless and pungent gas, ammonia (NH3) is a compound of nitrogen and hydrogen
Ammonia is a flammable gas, though it requires significant effort to ignite. Naturally present in the air, soil, and water, it is the sole widely recognized alkali gas.
While ammonia is a natural compound, its irritant properties become more severe as its concentration rises, making it highly toxic at elevated levels. To protect workers and maintain a safe environment, it is crucial to monitor exposure using an ammonia detector.

Characteristics of Ammonia
Hazard
Toxic, corrosive, and a strong irritant to the respiratory system, eyes, and skin. Difficult to burn (LEL 15%).
Exposure Limit
- OSHA PEL (Permissible Exposure Limit) - 50 ppm (TWA, 8-hour) - Safe for occupational exposure within limits.
- NIOSH REL (Recommended Exposure Limit) -25 ppm (TWA, 10-hour) - Recommended for long-term worker safety.
- NIOSH IDLH (Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health) - 300 ppm - Severe irritation, respiratory distress, potential fatal exposure.
- Lethal Concentration (LC50) - ~2,000 ppm - Fatal in short exposure.
- Odor Threshold - 5-50 ppm - Detectable by smell at low concentrations.
